Dear River Heights Music Families,

Unfortunately, this week we have learned that we will not be finishing the year together.  Who would have thought that when we all left each other on Friday the 13th that it would be the last time many of you would be in my class.  I am as disappointed about missing the end of the year as you all are.  It is typically the best time of the year because everyone can really play (sing) their instrument.  I was looking forward to your performances at festival.  Every group was doing an amazing job and I expected high marks when it came time for us to have our day.  I was also looking forward to our Knott’s Berry Farm performances, the Eastvale Showcase, the Jazz Band’s performance on the USS Iowa, and our end of the year concerts.  You all have worked hard this year and should be proud of your development.  Advanced band 8th graders, you are ready for high school band!  What you need to do now is keep your chops up.  Make sure that you are practicing.  7th graders and beginner 8th graders, there are still a few things that we need to work on to be ready for next year and I will be walking you through them step by step in the next 7-8 weeks.  Choir, you are a very strong group and I have some suggestions for you to work on that should help prepare you to be exceptional next year either at River Heights or Roosevelt.  Guitar class, you were on your way to covering more instruction than any other group and I was looking forward to your performance at RCC.  I was excited to see all of the musical pieces come together for each of you.

I do have an exciting announcement to make!  Smart Music has made their platform free to students through June 30th!  I have signed us up.  This is a remarkable interactive program that has a lot of resources for developing musicians.  I will be using this to guide you through everything that you need to learn for the rest of the year.  This program is a lot of fun!  This week, I want everyone to get signed up and enrolled into the right class.  The instructions are below.  There is a short video that will guide you through the process.

I will be keeping regular office hours on Zoom for those of you who need help.  I will be available on Mondays at 11:00 for Beginning and Intermediate Band, Mondays at 11:35 for Advanced Band, Wednesdays at 11:00 for Choir, and Wednesdays at 11:35 for Jazz Band and guitar.  I will send the link and code through remind so that we have a safe space.  I will begin office hours this Wednesday.  To simplify things, I am going to designate Mondays for band students and Wednesdays for choir and guitar.  But if you get stuck and need some help, don’t hesitate to jump into the other meeting.  I plan on giving assignments through my teacher page for the time being, so look on your class page and smart music regularly for instructions.  I will let you know if I move to something else.  Assignments will begin Monday April 13th, 2020.

Lastly, I have had some families contact me regarding the Knott’s Berry Farm money that they turned in.  I am working with the Booster on how to get that back to you.  In the meantime, there is a survey that I have included here and sent home through remind.  This is for parents only and please only take it once, don’t make things hard for our Booster Parents.

Stay safe!  Keep busy!  My best wishes go out to you and your family and I am counting down the days until I can see all of you again next year.

Jonathan Hartling
